The business was started up by W Crighton and Son Ltd while Adam was working for them as a Saw Doctor, during which time he managed and trained his first apprentice.
On August 2, 1982 the business was purchased and the name changed to Horowhenua Saw Doctors Ltd.
In 1989 Adam & Diane became sole owners of the business. Diane then started working part time in the office and a computer purchased for accounts.
Over time, the business has grown, turnover being reflected in the financial results. The business now includes 26 production work stations that are either fully automatic or manually operated. Staff have been added and new machinery purchased enabling HSD to be diversified and a profitable business.

In April 2002 a business was purchased in Petone from Thode Knife and Saw for sharpening guillotine blades. New premises were leased, one staff member retained and the business was renamed HSD Knife and Saw.
Horowhenua Saw Doctors is the largest complete saw doctoring service south of Rotorua.
